Newborn Beanie Crochet Pattern

These little beanies are the best sellers in my Etsy shop!  They make the perfect gift for a new baby and they are just tiny and too cute!  I can whip up a newborn-sized beanie in under 20 minutes and they sell like hot cakes!  I’m sharing the pattern with you today so you can make one too!  Below is the tutorial to make a newborn-sized beanie. For this beanie, I used baby yarns (light weight yarns) in Baby Blue and White with Crochet Hook Size H.

Striped Beanie Crochet Pattern

Size Newborn: Head circumference size 13” to 14”

Start with blue yarn for Foundation Ring and Round 1, then alternate colors at the end of every round.  Don’t tie off at the end of every round.  Just pick up the new color at the beginning of each round.  (There’s a photo below that shows how the inside of the beanie looks like, where the yarn picks back up after each round.)

Foundation Ring: Ch 5 and join with sl st to form a ring.

Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 11 dc into ring, sl st into top of first ch 3. (12 dc total)

Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc into same st. 2 dc in every st thereafter, sl st into top of first ch 3. (24 dc total)

Round 3: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), *2 dc in next st, 1 dc in following* Rep * until end of round, sl st into top of first ch 3. (36 dc total)

Round 4: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 1 dc each in next 3 sts, 2 dc in following st *1 dc in next 4 sts, 2 dc in following st* Rep * until end of round, sl st into top of first ch 3. (42 dc total)

Round 5-8: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 1 dc in each st until end of round. Sl st into top of first ch 3 and begin new round. (42 dc total in each round)

Round 9-10: Ch 1 (counts as first sc), sc in each st all around, sl st into beg ch. When Round 10 is completed, fasten off and weave in ends. (45 sc total)

Here’s a photo of what the beanie starts to look like after you’ve worked through Round 4.  Keep going and you’ll see the dome shape start to form.

Once you’re done, invert the beanie and tie up all loose ends.  In this photo, you can also see how the yarn of different colors carry over from one round to the next!
